What to Expect

You are currently undergoing endodontic treatment. A brief description follows:

ENDODONTICS – commonly referred to as root canal therapy involves removal of dead or dying pulp (nerve) from each canal or root of the tooth being treated. This is done by filing or reaming out each canal with handfiles, removing the pulp, enlarging and sterilizing the canals and finally filling them with a rubbery substance called gutta percha or occasionally some other materials.

Endodontic therapy will quite often involve multiple appointments. It is not uncommon to have some discomfort following each visit, which can generally be controlled with over-the-counter analgesics (such as Aspirin, Tylenol or Advil). If you experience sever pain or swelling or have any unanswered questions please do not hesitate to call our office.

Upon completion of treatment in this office, you will have just a temporary filling in your tooth (unless otherwise instructed) and will have to make an appointment with your regular dentist for a permanent restoration or filling as soon as possible. You should anticipate the possible need for an onlay or full crown.

A notice will be sent to you from this office in six months to make an appointment for a follow-up x-ray unless otherwise instructed.
